This device, which looks like a laboratory apparatus, was in fact invented by a chemist named Peter Schlumbohm in 1941. Its main feature: Proprietary, chemically bonded filters. These filters are of a thicker gauge than most paper filters. For this reason, Chemex grind is often in fact coarser than most pour over methods, despite the large opening.
